Good evening everyone: This journey has…

Good evening everyone:

This journey has been a rewarding one, not easy by any means, but the work is beautiful. It has been so wonderful to hear the stories from all the people we have met along the road, and be welcomed into all of the communities. As a result, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of generous love and support. This has led to some recent issues that we feel the need to address.

This water walk is a spiritual journey for all of us, bringing us together in love, prayer and song. However, over the past few days there have been a number of instances of people arriving at our location without any plans, support, food, water, transportation or child care. While we welcome all people who want to share and learn about the water walk, the safety of everyone is our utmost concern.

Everyone is responsible for his or her own well-being, safety, transportation and accommodation. We have organized and raised funds to cover the significant base expenses of a small camp for walkers who are completing the entire journey from beginning to end. Additional walkers are welcome to join us at any time, but must provide their own accommodations, food, water and means of safety. If you would like to join the walk, you must also bring a second driver for your vehicle and be responsible for your own transportation.

The water walk is taking place over long stretches of highway that is frequented by fast moving vehicles and trucks. We can not support anyone who chooses to expose their children to such a dangerous situation and will not permit children to accompany the walk when our lead walkers deem it unsafe.

We try to always have at least two lead walkers out at all time. One will be coordinating volunteers and the second will be walking or driving the safety vehicle. We can not be responsible for moving vehicles, caring for children, or driving people to other communities at the end of the day.

We are very concerned about the safety of some individuals who continue to disregard our requests for these safety measures. We want to keep this walk an inclusive-community event and that is safe and open to all.

Please email dene@lakewinnipegwaterwalk or call 204-927-7862 if you have any concerns or questions on how to prepare for the walk. Miigwetch.
